Understanding Depression: Feeling Down vs. Clinical Disorder
Many of us experience low moods from time to time. It’s a normal part of life. You might feel sad or irritable after an argument, a missed deadline, or even physical illness. This is usually low mood, and it typically goes away within a week or two, especially if the situation improves.
However, depression is different.
What is Depression?
Depression is a mood disorder that goes beyond temporary sadness. It’s characterized by persistent low mood or loss of interest in activities you once enjoyed, lasting for weeks at a time. It can also involve changes in appetite, sleep patterns, energy levels, and concentration.
Causes of Depression
Depression can be triggered by stressful life situations. Factors contributing to depression include:
- Situations: Stressful life events and unsuccessful attempts to cope with them can lead to feeling overwhelmed and hopeless.
- Emotions: Depression often begins with feelings of discouragement and sadness, which can evolve into hopelessness or emotional numbness.
- Actions: Lack of motivation and activity can contribute to and worsen depression.Symptoms of Depression:
- Significant changes in weight or appetite (either weight loss or gain)
- Feeling restless or slowed down
- Difficulty concentrating or making decisions
- Thoughts: Depressive thoughts about the situation, oneself, and the future can worsen the experience of depression.
- Physical State: Reduced energy and disrupted sleep can exacerbate depression.
- Feeling very low in mood or almost no interest in your life for most of the day, nearly every day, for at least two weeks.
- Difficulty sleeping or sleeping too much
- Feeling worthless or guilty
- Recurrent thoughts of death or suicide
It’s Important to Note: Depression is not a sign of weakness; it can affect anyone, regardless of their accomplishments or intelligence.
You are not alone. Around 4% of adults experience depression at any given time, and over 15% will face it at some point in their lives. Depression isn’t a sign of weakness
